Jacques began his career in 1973 in the insurance industry as financial consultant with Sanlam, one of SA insurance giants. He was one of a select group of advisors to use a computerized analysis of client’s financial planning and private wealth requirements. In 1977 he founded the Fintrust Group of companies, initially active as an investment and insurance brokerage house.
In 1981 Jacques changed the focus of the group to that of property development. A wide range of developments as turnkey developer was completed. In 1989, Fintrust partnered with a 150-year old trust company, Syfrets Ltd., to establish the SYFIN group on a 50/50 basis [http://www.syfin.co.za/]. Jacques served as CEO for several years and then later as Chairman of the Group. Most notably SYFIN developed the $250m + N1 City regional (Cape Peninsula) multi-use development as well as the full range of property developments. In the mid 90’s SYFRETS became part of NEDCOR INVESTMENT BANK, which is part of the Old Mutual stable. As of 1993 Jacques also served on various boards of start-up technology companies in the Security, Identification and Tracking markets. Fintrust co-funded these companies as an angel investor through its start-up phases. More than 40 exiting patents were created during the time of Fintrust’s involvement. These entities operated internationally and through this exposure Jacques built up a strong investor’s network, which was to be utilized after. The latter was placed on the back-burner because of the 2000 tech-crash and the fact that most of the technologies were too early for market acceptance. In early 2000 a lucrative offer to sell Fintrust’s interests in the Syfin Group to a listed entity was accepted. Jacques decided to explore the international project funding and capital market trading space as well as to expand Fintrust’s technology portfolio.
Since 2003 Fintrust developed into a family owned, South African based, private equity investment-holding group with interests in Fin/ ICT, cleantech, energy and agriculture. As Executive Chairman, Jacques still plays an active role in the various underlying investments. The strategy of Fintrust is to identify investment opportunities in the aforementioned sectors, adjudicate the feasibilities, promoters and management team, assist in structuring the appropriate funding package and then coordinate the implementation. Mostly a share of the equity is retained as payment for services. Jacques holds numerous Directorships and Trustee positions, encompassing operations of both a commercial and development aid / upliftment nature.
